Biennial Introduction

To ensure creative vitality and community involvement, the Art on the Plains regional juried exhibition returns as a biennial, now exhibiting every two years.


Exhibition Premise

Art on the Plains regional juried exhibition features both established and emerging visual artists working in the states of North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The exhibition will feature work of two- and three-dimensional media. 2008 celebrates the tenth anniversary of this regional art exhibition.

To mark the occasion, the Museum has invited artist and Fargo native T. L. Solien to jury the biennial. Art critic and past AOP juror Eleanor Heartney has said about the artist’s work: “T. L. Solien is that rare beast, the regionally based artist who has been able to turn his relationship with the Midwestern landscape into work with a universal appeal.”

Solien is an Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Solien has been in numerous exhibitions including the 1983 Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the 39th Biennial Exhibition of American Painting at the Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C., and “Avant-Garde in the Eighties” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His work has been collected by numerous museum, university, and corporate collections, including Plains Art Museum, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Fredrick Weismann Foundation, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Specifications

The Art on the Plains biennial is open to all artists who are residents of ND, SD, MN, MT, Manitoba, or Saskatchewan.


Works should be submitted fully assembled, framed, safe, and ready to hang or install. All glazed works must be covered with Plexiglas only.


Installation and 3-D works cannot be larger than 7’H x 7’W x 7’D. 2-D works can be no larger than 7’H x 7’W.


The signature of the artist on the official entry form authorizes permission for the Museum to photographically and electronically reproduce accepted works for the purpose of education, publications, and publicity. All published works will be credited to the artist.


Artists are not allowed to install their works. The works selected must be installable by the Museum’s professionally-trained staff. No exceptions.


Works accepted for the exhibition may not be withdrawn from the exhibition.


Works created before January 2007 are not eligible. Any work previously exhibited at Plains Art Museum will not be accepted.


Entries must conform to these specifications to be considered eligible.


ENTRY FEE

The fee to submit work is $30.00 in the form of a non-refundable check (U.S. dollars) made payable to Plains Art Museum.


DIGITAL ENTRY GUIDELINES

Artists are encouraged to submit two entries of work. Images must be identified on a separate text document with the artist’s name, title of work, date, medium, framed size, and insurance value. Do not put this information on the digital image file name.


The juror will select work based on digital jpeg images. Diptychs and suites are classified as one entry. One image per diptych or suite. No details. (Quality digital images can be enlarged on the computer, no detail needed.)


Images should be no smaller than 4 x 6 inches and no less than 300 dpi (dots per inch).


No slides will be accepted. (Slides can be scanned and burned to CD)


Images must be submitted on a non-returnable CD. The Museum is unable to accept any entries via email. Please do not embed the images in any program.


DELIVERY OF ARTWORK

Accepted artists are required to ship or hand-deliver their work(s) to the Museum no later than September 26, 2008. Artists are responsible for covering the cost of shipping to and from the Museum. Detailed shipping instructions will be included with the notice of acceptance.


INSURANCE

Plains Art Museum will insure all works on its premises during the exhibition period. Artists are responsible for insuring works while in transit to and from the Museum.


AWARDS

First Place: $500
Second Place: $350
Third Place: $200
People’s Choice Award: One exemplary work will be considered for purchase into the Museum’s permanent collection at the discretion of the Museum.

  • CD with 300 dpi jpeg
    (non-returnable)
  • entry fee ($30)
  • entry form/notification form


Submission of work to this exhibition shall constitute an agreement on the part of the artist to conditions set forth in this prospectus.


SALES

Plains Art Museum will forward any collectors interested in purchasing art work directly to the artist. The Museum does not participate in the sale of artwork.
